About Bill Schmidt Bill is a landscape painter whose style reflects his admiration for the French Impressionists Monet, Sisley, and Pissarro and early 20th century American Impressionists. Like these plein air painters, Bill works outdoors in all seasons on a variety of topics: countrysides and panoramas, street scenes, gardens, and especially marines. He believes that doing the painting on site can best capture the vibrancy and effects of color, light, and shadow in a scene. Most of his marine paintings depict scenes in Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay area where he paints weekly. He also makes annual or semiannual trips to New England and California and paints wherever his travels take him. Bill began painting as a hobby more than 30 years ago, but landscape painting became his full-time profession in 1984. Bill has received recognition in national publications, having been featured in an Art Business News article (2/97) on plein air painters and pictured in the American Artist article (4/98) on plein air painting societies. In addition, his technique for painting reflections in water was the subject of a cover article in The Artist’s Magazine (9/97). One of Bill’s paintings was included in Art From the Parks, a Northlight book with selections from the Top 100 in the Arts For The Parks competitions over the past 10 years. Two of his paintings were selected by the U.S. State Department’s Art in Embassies program and are currently hanging in the American Embassy in Sarajevo, Bosnia.
